Update - Lakeview reached out to me to listen to my concerns, so I’m bumping this up to 3 stars.
I'd give negative stars if I could. My baby sister went here for chest pains and was treated very poorly. The nurses were almost non-existent. Once she complained they treated her even worse and never came back to room at all until she threatened to leave. They made racial remarks. When she tried to tell them she wanted to leave they tried to force her to stay and refused to remove the IV. They kept telling her she was being discharged after nothing was resolved. She waited 4 more hours before losing her patients and dealing with the pain. They never called for an x-ray or ordered a CT scan (FOR CHEST PAINS). She got up to leave and tried to remove the IV herself due to waiting hours for the nurse to do it so she can leave. The rude nurse called security and started yelling code white. She already had high bold pressure and this made it even worse. We left and went to St.Tammany where she got excellent treatment and they immediately called for an x-ray and scheduled a CT scan for the next morning. Come to find out she had a collapsed lung and needed to be scheduled for surgery. I wouldn't bring my worse enemy to Lakeview. I have friend there now and he's been having to ask for his own medication for a severe infection that caused him to be admitted for at least 10 days. He also complained and had security called on him and now the nurses are again non-existent. If this was an elderly person and they complained they would be left for dead. Pretty sad that people get away with this. Don't bother messaging me a number to call. I see all the other reviews and its obvious nothings being done about it.
On a positive note, the ER physician agreed to order a test that my primary care physician suggested that I request the next time an attack occurred. Hopefully, the sample wasn’t contaminated due to the poor handling.
I have an undiagnosed condition that has resulted in 5 trips to the ER in as many years do to severe, poorly-localized abdominal pain, extreme fatigue, and nausea. Unfortunately, the most recent attack occurred Thanksgiving Day en route from Hammond to Mississippi. By the time I was admitted, I could barely stand, speak, and had abdominal pain that dropped me to my knees. The only pleasant person I interacted with was the receptionist. Every other nurse and physician was either highly dismissive or condescending or both.
I loved the nurses from the third floor OB post-op. Everyone was very helpful and pleasant.
If I had known what I know now, I would have asked my parents to drive the additional 35 minutes back to North Oaks or take a chance on St. Tammany. I would recommend the same to all my friends and family on the north shore. I’m just glad the Lakeview staff were apathetic enough to not suggest an appendectomy because I now shudder at the thought of having surgery there.
Great experience. Would like to give a special thank you to the patient care tech (whose name I can't remember for the life of me). She was very encouraging and patient with a very anxious me. While the clinical aspect of patient care is important, there is also that special "something" that some people have. She definitely has it. Wish I could put her name here.
A couple of other things that I have never experienced in any other ED - urine samples left on the counter in my room for hours (especially relevant this visit as a requested test is highly sensitive to UV light), blood-stained sheets, and a general unwillingness to provide a wheelchair for someone who can’t walk - seriously, nurses were just staring at me as I walked out of the bathroom and tried to mouth that I needed help back to my room until some random guy offered me help, and my dad had to find a wheelchair for me when I was discharged because apparently, the staff doesn’t even care about liability, much less their patients.
I get that it’s Thanksgiving, and I really try not to be too critical of hospital employees because I’m well-aware of the stress of that environment - my dad is a medical professional - and many physicians and nurses have done a lot to help me manage symptoms of this condition, but my experience at the Lakeview ED was just awful.
If you believed that Lakeview would have periodically checked the vitals of someone who could barely talk or move his limbs or had lost all skin color, you would be sorely mistaken. At one point (I don’t remember this because I was in and out of consciousness) I complained to my sister that my face was burning up, and apparently it was very hot to the touch as I had developed a fever since being admitted and the initial vitals check, so she asked a nurse behind the counter if she could bring us an ice pack. She responded with, “I don’t think that’s going to help anything,” and my sister had to repeat the request before the nurse agreed. At no point during the remainder of the 4+ hour visit was my temperature checked. In fact, the only checkups were the nurses and doctors asking me, “how’s it going?” Apparently, they weren’t bothered enough by the fact that I was moving my mouth without being able to produce much, if any, sound to actually check vitals or anything that required touching me - they just turned around and walked out.
The entire NICU staff was amazing! Cristy & Alicia really stood out and I love how well they treated our baby girl. Mrs Barbara from the nursery was so sweet and she checked on her daily and just everyone in the department kept us at ease. Thank you!
